Tracking cash balance in your portfolio

If you’re not interested in tracking cash in your portfolio, the only thing you need to know is that when dividends are paid out, they are automatically added to your total cash holdings. But if you wish to track cash in your portfolios here are a few points that can help you track it more effectively:

Deposits and withdrawals

Similarly to how you add 'Sell' and 'Buy' transactions, you can add a ‘Deposit cash’ and ‘Withdraw cash’ transactions to add and deduct from the cash balance in your portfolio as needed. [Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/5Rg6td9.png)

Cash-based transactions

Any of your stock transactions can be individually linked to the cash balance. You can do so by clicking on the checkbox next to the 'Cash-based’ title in a transaction update screen. See the photo below for details.

When you make a transaction cash-based, the cost of a ‘Buy’ transaction will be deducted from the cash holdings and the value of a ’Sell’ transaction will be added to the total cash. [Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/phR5jQm.png)

Effect on portfolio metrics

When cash is deposited, it adds to both the cost and value of the portfolio. When cash is withdrawn, the portfolio cost and portfolio value are reduced by the withdrawn amount. Also, any dividends that are part of the cash contribute to the portfolio value but don't affect the portfolio cost.
